De reeks Paradise Portraits (2001) is net als de reeks Paradise The Club (2001) een kritische kanttekening bij de feestcultuur van de jaren negentig. Het zijn beelden van heftige feesten waar vrouwen worden aangerand door enge clowns. Erwin Olaf werd voor deze serie niet alleen geïnspireerd door zijn eigen ervaringen in het feestcircuit, maar ook door het schilderij De ontering van Hippodamea van Rubens. In Paradise Portraits (2001) toont hij een serie close-ups van de gezichten van mooie jonge vrouwen en angstaanjagende clowns. Subliem in al hun gruwelijkheid.

Like the series, Paradise The Club (2001), the series Paradise Portraits (2001) is a critical comment on the party culture of the 1990s. They are images of heavy parties, with women being indecently assaulted by scary clowns. For this series, Erwin Olaf was not only inspired by his own experiences on the party scene, but also by Rubens’ painting, The Abduction of Hippodamia. In Paradise Portraits (2001) he shows a series of close-ups of the faces of beautiful young women and frightening clowns. Sublime in all their horror.

Erwin Olaf maakt autonoom en commercieel werk. Naast foto’s maakt hij ook korte films. Hij werd vooral bekend door foto’s te maken van mensen die niet helemaal voldoen aan het schoonheidsideaal. In zijn werk is alles in scène gezet en tot in de kleinste details uitgedacht. Humor blijft echter steeds het toonaangevende element. Zijn foto’s blinken uit in fantasie, rijkdom en technische perfectie. Zijn werk wordt wereldwijd gepubliceerd en tentoongesteld.

Erwin Olaf produces autonomous and commercial work. In addition to photographs, he also makes short films. He primarily gained fame by taking photographs of people who don’t entirely conform to the beauty ideal. Everything is staged in his work and thought out in the minutest detail. Humour remains the predominant element, however. His photographs are outstanding in their imagination, richness and technical perfection. His work is published and exhibited worldwide.
