Kunst is voor Kimiko Yoshida in de eerste plaats de ervaring van de transmutatie:
“Transformatie is voor mij de ultieme waarde van het werk. Mijn Autoportraits dienen enkel als de plaats voor, en de formule van die ommekeer, die metamorfose. Alles wat niet ik is, interesseert me. Daar zijn waar ik denk niet te zijn, en verdwijnen daar waar ik denk te zijn, dat is de essentie.”
Ze formuleert het, bijzonder precies, ook als volgt: “Elke foto is een viering van het vergankelijke. Mijn zelfportretten zijn ‘stillevens’. Wat ik toon, is het beeld van een kadaver.” Het is meteen duidelijk waar het over gaat, over het zijn en het niet-zijn, het leven en de dood, de ijdelheid en de eindigheid van alles. En bovenal is het plots de identiteit waarnaar wordt verlangd, wordt het gemeenschappelijke kortgesloten, de genealogie uitgewist. Plotseling heeft de overschrijding van het negatief plaatsgevonden.

For Kimiko Yoshida, art is first and foremost the experience of transmutation: “Transformation is, for me, the ultimate value of the work. My self portraits simply serve as the place and the formula for that change, that metamorphosis. I’m interested in everything that is not me. Being where I think I’m not and disappearing where I think I am: that’s the essence”.
She formulates it very precisely, as follows: “Each photograph is a celebration of mortality. My self portraits are ‘still lifes’. What I show is the image of a corpse”. It is immediately clear what it is about, about being and not being, life and death, vanity and the finiteness of all things. And above all, it’s suddenly the identity that’s longed for; it’s communally short-circuited, erased from genealogy. Suddenly, the negative has been overstepped.
